This month, Sudan plans to hold its first national multi-party elections in 24 years, with six levels of government positions--including the presidential seat--at stake. It sounds like a hopeful step forward for this nation torn apart by a seven-year civil war; unfortunately, the reality would almost certainly bring further tragedy to the people of Sudan.

Even before one vote has been cast, there are grave concerns that this election will not be as free and fair as promised; in fact, as of this writing, nearly all opposition parties in Sudan have withdrawn their presidential candidates in boycott. The Save Darfur Coalition reports that potential voters have been intimidated into not registering for the elections, and they worry that when voters get to the polls they will be threatened by security forces. There are also concerns about the lack of proper election monitors, increased violence in South Sudan, and continued censorship of the press.

We need President Obama and our representatives in Congress to send a message to the world community, letting them know that they will not accept illegitimate elections.
