Tsunami en Indonesia

APIA, Samoa — A senior Samoan disaster official says the nation's death toll has risen to 83 following a massive tsunami. She said more bodies are expected to be recovered as searches resumed at dawn.

The new count in Samoa brings the total toll to 119 after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake hurled huge waves at the Samoas. At least 30 people have died in American Samoa and another six in nearby Tonga.

Filomina Nelson told New Zealand's National Radio on Wednesday that most of the bodies found thus far were elderly people and young children.

Nelson says all the towns and tourist resorts along the southern cost of Samoa's main Upolu island "are destroyed."

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

APIA, Samoa (AP) – Disaster officials rushed food, medicine and a temporary morgue to the Samoas on Wednesday after a powerful earthquake unleashed a tsunami that flattened villages and swept cars and people out to sea. At least 99 people were killed.

Survivors fled to higher ground on the South Pacific islands after the magnitude 8.0 quake struck at 6:48 a.m. local time (1:48 p.m. EDT; 1748 GMT) Tuesday.

Four tsunami waves 15 to 20 feet (4 to 6 meters) high roared ashore on American Samoa about 15 minutes after the quake, reaching up to a mile (1.5 kilometers) inland, Mike Reynolds, superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa, was quoted as saying by a parks service spokeswoman.

Story continues below

Military transports carrying medical personnel, food, water, medicines and other supplies were headed to the stricken islands.

"Right now, we're focused on bringing in the assistance for people that have been injured, and for the immediate needs of the tens of thousands of survivors down there," Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate said.

A Coast Guard C-130 plane loaded with aid and carrying FEMA officials was headed from Hawaii to American Samoa's capital of Pago Pago, where debris had been cleared from runways to allow for emergency planes to land.

It's not immediately clear what kind of warning people in the two islands had once the earthquake hit and set off the tsunami. Some people had enough warning to flee the tsunami. But a warning system run by the Global Security and Crisis Management Unit failed to evaluate the tsunami's impact in real time because of a hardware failure.

New Zealand's acting Prime Minister Bill English said tents, stretchers, the temporary morgue and a body identification team were sent to Samoa after a "specific request" from local officials, who are "are very concerned about the growing death toll."

The quake was centered about 120 miles south of the islands of Samoa, which has about 220,000 people, and American Samoa, a U.S. territory of 65,000.

Another strong underwater earthquake rocked western Indonesia on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the Samoan quake, briefly triggering a tsunami alert for countries along the Indian Ocean. The 7.6-magnitude quake toppled buildings, cut power and triggered a landslide on Sumatra island, and at least 75 people were reported killed. Experts said the seismic events were not related.

The Samoan capital, Apia, was virtually deserted by afternoon, with schools and businesses closed. Hours after the waves struck, sirens rang out with another tsunami alert and panicked residents headed for higher ground again, although there was no indication of a new quake.

In Pago Pago, the streets and fields were filled with debris, mud, overturned cars and several boats as a massive cleanup effort stretched into the night. Several buildings in the city – just a few feet above sea level – were flattened. Power was expected to be out in some areas for up to a month.

Water service has been restored to many villages, but power is still out in most areas. More than 1,000 people spent the night in 15 emergency shelters.

President Barack Obama declared a major disaster for American Samoa, adding that he and his wife, Michelle, "will keep those who have lost so much in our thoughts and prayers."

Hampered by power and communications outages, officials in the South Pacific islands struggled to determine casualties and damage.

Hundreds of people bombarded American Samoa's radio stations with requests to announce the names of their missing loved ones. Broadcasters urged listeners to contact their families immediately.

Samoan police commissioner Lilo Maiava told The Associated Press that police had confirmed 63 deaths, while in American Samoa, Gov. Togiola Tulafono said at least 30 people were killed. Both said searches were continuing.

Authorities in Tonga, southwest of the Samoas, confirmed at least six dead and four missing, according to English.

"I don't think anybody is going to be spared in this disaster," said Tulafono, who was in Hawaii for a conference. He added that a member of his extended family was among the dead.

Joey Cummings of radio station 93KHJ in Pago Pago told the BBC that he watched from a balcony as a 15-foot tsunami wave struck, and "the air was filled with screams."

He yelled for people to run uphill, "but they just ran down the street away from the wave rather than make a sharp left and up the steep mountain just feet away."

A "river of mud" carried trees, cars, buses and boats past his building, which is practically at sea level, Cummings told the BBC.

Some people searched for trapped survivors, he said, but others looted stores. Bodies were stacked in the back of pickup trucks, he added.

Alex Godinet, chief of staff for American Samoa's congressional delegate, said his "whole house and everything was shaking." When he went to the nearby village of Leone, the tsunami wave had already struck and receded.

"People, elders were trying to crawl all over the place, crawl up to higher place, higher areas," he told NBC's "Today" show.

American Samoa's dominant industry – tuna canning – was affected. Chicken of the Sea's packing plant was forced to close, although the facility wasn't damaged, the San Diego-based company said.

New Zealander Graeme Ansell said the Samoan beach village of Sau Sau Beach Fale was leveled.

"It was very quick. The whole village has been wiped out," Ansell told New Zealand's National Radio from a hill near Apia. "There's not a building standing. We've all clambered up hills, and one of our party has a broken leg."

A New Zealand P3 Orion maritime surveillance airplane had searched for survivors off the coast of Samoa.

In Carson City, Calif., High Chief Loa Pele Faletogo, president of the Samoan Federation of America, comforted Samoans in the U.S. who came to him seeking news of their relatives. The chief said he learned the body of one of his cousins, in her 60s, was found floating along the shore.

"I am the one people run to when things happen," Faletogo said. "One of the qualities of a chief is to calm people down even though it is hurting inside."

All 65 employees at the National Park of American Samoa were accounted for, said Holly Bundock, spokeswoman for the National Park Service's Pacific West Region in Oakland, Calif. The park service has 13 permanent workers and between 30 and 50 volunteers, depending on the time of year.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs said three Australians were among the dead. The British Foreign Office said one Briton was missing and presumed dead.

"So much has gone. So many people are gone," said a visibly shaken Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi as he flew from New Zealand to Apia. "I'm so shocked, so saddened by all the loss."

He said his village of Lepa was destroyed. Although the alarm sounded on the radio and gave people time to get to higher ground, "not everyone escaped," he added.

Before boarding the C-130 with the FEMA officials in Hawaii, Tulafono said "each and every family" in American Samoa will know one of the dead.

The Samoa Red Cross estimated 15,000 people were affected by the tsunami.

Residents of both Samoa and American Samoa said they were shaken awake by Tuesday's quake for two to three minutes. It was centered about 20 miles (30 kilometers) below the ocean floor and was followed by at least three aftershocks of at least 5.6 magnitude.

The effects of the tsunami could be felt nearly 5,000 miles away (7,500 kilometers) on a Japanese island, though there were no reports of damage or injuries there.

U.S. officials said strong currents and dangerous waves were forecast from California to Washington state. No major flooding was expected, however.

While the earthquake and tsunami were big, they were not on the same scale of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, said Brian Atwater of the U.S. Geological Survey in Seattle. That tsunami killed more than 230,000 in a dozen countries across Asia.

Although the quakes in the Samoas and Indonesia struck within 24 hours of each other, experts said there was no link between them.

"When you look at that, it's like, 'Oh something's going on there.' But researchers are convinced that because quakes are essentially a random process that they're not related," said Don Blakeman, an analyst for the U.S.-based National Earthquake Information Center.

Various factors explain why the Samoa earthquake caused a massive tsunami and the Indonesia quake, with a magnitude of 7.6, did not.

The difference in magnitude was one factor, Blakeman said. "It also has to do with the depth of earthquakes. The Samoan one was very shallow. The Sumatran one, I think, was about 80 kilometers (49 miles)."

No Impact Week With HuffPost: Everything You Need To Know

Heard about Huffington Post's No Impact Week starting October 18th? Interested in finding out more? What to get involved? Here's everything you need to know.

Sign up here to join.

Who:
HuffPost Green, Eyes & Ears Citizen Journalism Initiative and The No Impact Project are partnering to bring the inaugural No Impact Week to The Huffington Post. The No Impact Project is a nonprofit started by Colin Beavan, star of the documentary film No Impact Man and author of the book by the same title.

What:
For the inaugural No Impact Week, the No Impact Project has created a detailed guide -- coming soon -- that describes how to go about reducing your ecological impact one day at a time. No, not everyone has to completely give up their cars and shut off their power; the guide gives many achievable levels of reducing your footprint and you can pick the goals that are right for you. Each day will focus on one aspect of how we live. Sunday's focus is on reducing consumption, on Monday the spotlight will be on reducing trash, Tuesday will be about commuting without adding carbon to the environment - i.e., encouraging bike riding and walking; Wednesday will be about encouraging eating foods grown locally and/or sustainably -- and so forth.

Why:
As we learned about Colin, and saw No Impact Man, the documentary film and read his book, about his family's year-long experiment, we were downright inspired. His non-profit provides the perfect opportunity to bring this conversation paired with action to the HuffPost community. "We want to spark a conversation about the way our culture looks at consumption," says Arianna Huffington. "We hope that after focusing for just over a week on how our daily habits impact the world around them, our readers will see the effect our actions have in a new light. It will be very interactive and social - and empowering."

Where:

Everywhere. The Internet, Your House, Your School, Your Office, Your Book Club. We want all types of people of all political persuasions to take part. We'll be inviting participants to report on their week by sending in photos, videos and commentary.

Q: I've been single for a while now, have joined quite a few free dating sites, and I either get matches by people from the states (I live in Ontario, Canada) or from guys that are not in my age range. Or not even anything I would like. Or on the other hand, if I send a message to somebody, they don't reply back. What am I doing wrong?"

A: The most probable reasons why you aren't getting responses to your dating profile (or are getting responses from the "wrong" kinds of people) are:

  • Either you haven't tweaked your wants on your dating profile properly, or the free dating sites you are using aren't serving up their matches properly;

  • There is something off-putting in your dating profile;

  • You are too picky when it comes to responding to potential suitors;

  • You would be better served by a pay-per-use dating site.

Let's explore all four of these possibilities a bit further.

Possible Reason #1: Your Dating Profile Searches Aren't Working Properly

Frequently - but not always - free dating sites have either limited or lacking search engines that don't work properly. I have to assume you are using either Plenty of Fish or Ok Cupid since they are the top free dating sites at the moment, both of whom have excellent search options. However, you'll need to tweak the standard search options in your dating profile to ensure you only get high-quality matches. At Plenty of Fish, log into your account and click on the "Mail Settings" tab, and on Ok Cupid, you'll find what you are looking for under My Account --> Edit Settings. Having said that, if you put too many restrictions here, it'll impede some people from being able to contact you or reply to any messages you've sent.

Possible Reason #2: Your Dating Profile Needs Tweaking

In Why You're Not Getting Responses, I've outlined two reasons directly related to your dating profile that may be holding you back: your "tag line", and your profile photo. If you don't have a profile photo posted, this may be the only reason why you aren't getting responses. Several studies - including one with eHarmony - have shown that men look at profile pictures first, and if they don't find the photo they see appealing, they won't bother exerting any effort into getting to know you better. eHarmony found the results of this study so conclusive on this matter that they went from not housing photos on the site at all, to requesting all users post a photo of themselves. It may not be fair or right, but that's the way the dating world works today.

Other profile issues include being negative, overtly sexual, self-deprecating, or too picky - our next potential reason.

Possible Reason #3: Is Pickiness a Problem?

I find that many women have become a tad too picky when it comes to their relationship expectations. This may or may not be the case with you, but I'm guessing from the way you've worded your question that you've got a few man-meeting criteria points that may not be helpful in your search. Try stripping down your list of "needs" and "wants" for a first date to a measly three: within ten years of your own age, without significant red flags that would affect your personal safety, and within a specified geographic area. Many of my friends, clients and readers have told me time and time again that when they lessened their search criteria and opened up their mind to dating people that didn't fall into their set type, they were finally able to meet the person of their dreams.

Possible Reason #4: You'll Get Better Responses To Your Dating Profile on a Pay-Per-Use Dating Site

The online dating world has changed dramatically over the past five years. Free dating sites may not have had a lot of users, but the early adopters definitely found great use out of the fledgling sites. Today, there are so many users that many free dating sites can become bloated with profiles that are no longer in use, fake, or poorly crafted to really demonstrate what the dating profile holder is looking for.

This recent change in online dating is unfortunate, but it is nowhere near unsurmountable - yet. What I would suggest is that you sign up for one of the less expensive, yet still popular pay-per-use dating sites. Not only will you get a whole different set of users to draw upon and possibly meet, but you'll know that everyone else who has a dating profile posted is really serious about meeting someone and not just posting a dating profile for kicks. They've invested some money into the deal (even if it is just a small amount), and thus will net some higher-quality pickings. I suggest Lavalife(which is a great system in that the first respondent is the one paying for contact), or Match.com.

Your other option is trying to meet people through other online means. If money is a serious issue and thus why you are only using free dating sites, then try perusing the forums at Plenty of Fish for Ontario (or whatever area you are looking to meet new people). Not only will you generate new discussion about dating-related topics, but you'll also be privy to a host of singles events posted by other users. Try attending one or two - or even post one of your own. When I lived in Calgary, I found it extremely difficult to meet new people, so I posted an impromptu, "Who'd like to go for coffee?" on the forums one day. Fifteen people showed up.

Es bueno hacer ejercicio si estas enfermo?

The average adult has two to three upper respiratory infections each year. Many athletes wonder if they should continue their training routine when sick. While research is limited, most experts recommend that if your symptoms are above the neck and you have no fever, exercise is probably safe. Intensive exercise should be postponed until a few days after the symptoms have gone away. However, if there are symptoms or signs of the flu, such as fever, extreme tiredness, muscle aches, swollen lymph glands, then at least two weeks should probably be allowed before you resume intensive training.

Other Tips to Prevent Illness:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet. The immune system depends on many vitamins and minerals for optimal function. However, at this time, there is no good data to support supplementation beyond 100 percent of the Recommended Dietary Allowances. A good rule is to eat 10-15 calories per pound of "desired body weight." If your ideal weight is 170 lbs, then consume 1700-2550 calories a day (1700 for sedentary individuals and 2550 for extremely active types.)
  • Avoid rapid weight loss. Low-calorie diets, long-term fasting and rapid weight loss have been shown to impair immune function. Losing weight while training heavily is not good for the immune system.
  • Obtain adequate sleep. Major sleep disruption (e.g., three hours less than normal) has been linked to immune suppression.
  • Avoid over-training and chronic fatigue. Space vigorous workouts and race events as far apart as possible. Keep "within yourself" and don't push beyond your ability to recover.
  • Wash your hands frequently. This is often your best prevention. Don't forget your fingernails.
  • Avoid putting your hands near your eyes, nose or mouth. Most bacteria and germs are spread from a surface to your hands to your face not by air.
  • Get a flu shot. Especially if you have a weakened immune system.
  • Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can reduce immune functioning making you susceptible to sickness.
  • Drink more water. In the fall and winter, it is easy to overlook your thirst and get dehydrated. Make sure you consume 8 glasses a day.
  • Continue a moderate exercise program. Try to maintain a consistent exercise routine
  • Limit alcohol intake. Alcohol can be dehydrating which, in turn, may decrease your resistance to bacteria.
  • Finally, listen to your body. If you are less than 100% you will feel better and recover faster if you let yourself rest.

Ovnis y policias

Summary: A frightening UFO case which involved physical trace elements occurred in Minnesota on August 27, 1979. This baffling account centers around Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson of Marshall County. Johnson was patrolling near the North Dakota border about 1:40 AM, when he noticed a bright light coming through his side window. Johnson knew it was not typical vehicle lights. He thought it might be a small plane in trouble and about to crash.
Unconsciousness for 39 Minutes: He made a left turn to get a better view of the unknown light, and make a report if needed. All at once, the strange light moved directly toward his squad car, a 1977 Ford LTD. In a second, it was upon his vehicle. He estimated that the light had traveled 1 1/2 miles in an instant. He was blinded by its brilliance, heard the sound of breaking glass, and then lost consciousness. Johnson would later relate that "I was rendered either unconscious, neutralized or unknowing for a period of approximately 39 minutes."
Sent to Hospital: When he came to, his vehicle was sitting off the road, and he could see where he had braked and skidded across the highway. He felt drugged, weak. At 2:19 AM, he radioed police headquarters, and asked for back-up. Another Deputy would soon arrive at the scene, and seeing Johnson's condition, radioed for an ambulance. Soon, he was under a physicians care at Warren Hospital. The doctor found that Johnson was in a state of shock, and his eyes had suffered "mild welders burns."
Baffled by Incident: As the Sheriff's office began to investigate what had happened to Johnson and his vehicle, they were baffled by the unusual damage done. The inside headlight on the driver's side was destroyed but the one to its immediate left was untouched. On the left side of the front hood, there was a circular dent about 1/2 inch in diameter. It was close to the windshield, which was also cracked. The crack was from the top of the shield to the bottom, with four distinctive impact spots.
Clocks 14 Minutes Slow: Another unexplainable fact was that Johnson's wristwatch was, although still running properly, 14 minutes slow. Also, the clock in his vehicle was also 14 minutes behind. The car's radio and Johnson's wristwatch were always synchronized with the official police station time. No explanation could be found for the missing time. Also, beginning at about 6 inches above the base, his car's police antenna was bent at a 60-degree angle. Also there was unexplainable damage to the trunk antenna.
Investigation Finds No Cause: All of the damage to Johnson's 1977 Ford LTD was to the driver's side. The investigation determined that the police cruiser had traveled 950 feet from the initial impact. The Sheriff's Department could not determine what happened to the vehicle, and theories like being hit by a low-flying plane, or another vehicle, or even a hoax were quickly ruled out. The Center for UFO Studies also made an on-site investigation, along with officials from the Ford Motor Company.
Mechanical Forces of Unknown Origin: No one could offer a tenable explanation for the damage, and the damage to the windshield was the most bizarre. Meridan French, from Ford, noted after examining the windshield fractures that "Even after several days of reflection on the crack patterns and apparent sequence of fractures, I still have no explanation for what seem to be inward and outward forces acting almost simultaneously. I can only [conclude]... that all cracks were from mechanical forces of unknown origin."
Conclusions: The incredible sequence of events on August 27, 1979 in Marshall County, Minnesota mark one of the best documented cases of physical trace evidence left by an encounter with an unknown flying object. The incident was investigated by three separate organizations and no hint of a hoax, or an explanation of natural means was forthcoming.

They always say that UFOs, just like people, come in all shapes and sizes. Of course, the most common UFO shapes are the disc, or flying saucer shape, the round orbs, and the flying triangles. However, on rare occasion, an unusually shaped object is seen and documented. One of the most compelling cases of an odd-shaped UFO occurred in 1967 between the cities of Okehampton and Holsworthy, in Devon, U.K. The case is known as the "Flying Cross" incident.

The cross itself is often related to the Christian symbol of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, but the Devon case had no religious overtones. The case receives a high degree of credibility because it was witnessed first hand by two policemen, PC Clifford Waycott, and PC Roger Willey. The two officers first spotted the cross-shaped UFO flying just over the treetops between the two aforementioned cities on October 24, 1967.

The two officers began a hot pursuit of the object, but could never gain ground on it, as it moved across the countryside. The UFO would slow to about 50 miles per hour, and even stop in midair, but as they approached it, the UFO would fly away from them, at times gaining speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. The entire chase covered 14 miles.

Though each policeman had the other to corroborate his own reality, they both decided to stop at a farm house to get a third person to tell them they were not hallucinating. They broke off their chase of the object because of the high speeds they were traveling-afraid they would cause an accident, and injure or kill an innocent pedestrian.

The flying cross would eventually disappear from their view, but before it did, a second one appeared. It was also very bright, yet made no sound that the two officers could hear. They were both amazed at how quickly the objects could accelerate from a hovering position. This fact alone was enough to convince the two policeman that what they were seeing were not conventional airplanes.

Later at a press conference, Waycott would remark: "The light wasn't piercing, but it was very bright. It was star-spangled-just like looking through wet glass and although we reached 90 MPH it accelerated away from us."

In the next couple of days, there would be numerous other sightings of the flying cross UFOs, and remarkably, six police officers in Glossop, Derbyshire reported the sighting of a "fiery" cross. In the ensuing investigation, the closest air base to the incident, RAF Chivenor was queried, but denied having radar confirmation of any "unknown" objects. The flying crosses seemed to make themselves known for a brief period of time, and then disappear quietly into the annals of Ufology.

Introduction to Sighting

Recently, I was contacted by Lawrence Gessner, former Sheriff in Sheridan County, city of McClusky, North Dakota. He related a UFO sighting to me, and sent along copies of the original police report, titled "Unidentified Flying Object Report." The report references an event that occurred on July 10, 2003.

The report reads as follows:

On 07-10-03 at approximately 2300 hours, my wife Kelly went outside on our back deck to have a cigarette. While she was looking up into the southeastern sky, she noticed a small formation of three or four stars.

One of the stars shot straight down and stopped. A series of red lights came on, and the object started moving in a northwest direction. She yelled for me to get out there, and when I got outside I saw what I first believed to be an aircraft, except the red, white, and green lights were in a vertical formation, not horizontal.

Description of Object

I now noticed that the speed of this object was relatively slow. I listened, and heard a muffled sound much like a jet aircraft makes. The object got closer, and I estimated it to be about 1,000 feet in the air.

It was just light enough to make out a silhouette. The object was longer from top to bottom than it was from front to back. It had depth to it, and if I were to associate a shape to it, I would say diamond-shaped.

The craft had two small, red lights on the front of it, and two small, red lights on the rear about in the center of it. When it got closer, I noticed several larger windows that projected light from inside the craft.

Light Configuration

There were three larger red and green lights running vertically along the front edge of the craft. I was trying to pay attention to as many details as I could, and the one thing that stands out in my mind is that the speed was so slow and the muffled jet engine sound did not match and the sound was farther behind the craft.

I also estimated this craft to be around 100 feet long and approximately 200 feet high. It was moving too slowly for its size. The sky was lighter in the west, and I was hoping that when it got in a position that the sky was lighter, I would be able to tell what it was.

Shaped Like a Diamond

As the craft got to this position, I noticed the diamond-shape of this craft, and that it was not flat, but did have some depth to it. We had been watching it for approximately 30 seconds. I knew it was right over my deputy's house, so I ran inside and called him.

It told him to go outside and look up, because there was some sort of UFO over his house. My wife had run out to the front porch, and I went outside and she told me about the same time I said UFO that the craft stopped, the red lights went out, the jet engine sound stopped, there was a soft, white glow around the back of the craft, and the craft shot straight up and disappeared. The craft was approximately 6-10 miles away at this point. My deputy called back to tell me he saw nothing.

Witness Credibility

I have spent 14 years in the U.S. Air Force, all of them around jet aircraft. I cannot explain what we witnessed using any logical means. Our Law Enforcement dispatch center is handled on a state wide basis.

I called State Radio and identified myself by my unit # 4610, and inquired if they had received any reports of strange aircraft or UFO reports. I was told NO. They informed me that if they did, they would notify me.

The report is signed:

Christians held protests and burned the band's records when Lennon made the controversial pronouncement in 1966.
